Frequently Asked Questions
What is Bodily Injury Coverage?
This coverage combined with Property Damage protects you when you get into a car accident and you are at fault. This coverage pays for claims and lawsuits by people who are injured or die as a result of that accident. It compensates others for pain, suffering, and financial damages such as lost wages. Injuries to the people in your car, including the driver, are not covered under this coverage. The minimum limits of coverage are mandatory. You could be sued for more than the required limits for Bodily Injury Liability so buying higher limits may protect you from large losses. This coverage also provides you and any additional insureds with a legal defense if another party in the accident files a lawsuit against you or the additional insured.
What is Property Damage Coverage?
This coverage combined with Bodily Injury protects you when you get into an accident which damages another person’s car and/or property and you are at fault. This coverage pays for claims and lawsuits by people whose property is damaged. This coverage also provides you and any additional insureds with a legal defense if another party in the accident files a lawsuit against you or the additional insured.
What is Combined Single Limit Coverage?
This coverage offers a single maximum limit of protection per accident for bodily injury and property damage combined. It covers other people’s bodily injuries or death for which you are responsible. Claims for bodily injury may be for such things as medical bills, loss of income or pain and suffering. This coverage also offers protection for you if your car damages someone else’s property and provides you with legal defense if another party in the accident files a lawsuit against you.
What is Personal Injury Protection or PIP?
It pays the medical and hospital expenses of you and any additional insureds. It may also pay for income loss, essential services, a death benefit and a funeral expense benefit regardless of fault.
What is the Limitation on Lawsuit Threshold?
Under the No Limitation on Lawsuit Option, you retain the right to sue the person who caused an auto accident for pain and suffering for any injury. Under the Limitation on Lawsuit Option, you agree not to sue the person who caused an auto accident for your pain and suffering unless you sustain one of the following injuries: (a) Loss of body part; (b) Significant disfigurement or significant scarring; (c) A displaced fracture; (d) Loss of a fetus; (e) Permanent injury (any injury shall be considered permanent when the body part or organ, or both, has not healed to function normally and will not heal to function normally with further medical treatment.); (f) Death. This option does not affect your ability to sue for economic damages such as medical expenses and lost wages.
What is Uninsured Motorist Coverage?
It pays you for property damage or bodily injury if you are in an auto accident caused by an uninsured motorist.
What is Medical Payments Coverage?
Covers policyholders and their family members when they are injured while riding in someone else’s car or when they are hit by a car while on foot or bicycling.
What is Collision?
Covers damage to your car when your car hits, or is hit by another vehicle or other object. It pays to fix your vehicle less the deductible you choose. If you have a loan or a lease, then the lien holder usually requires this coverage. The deductible is the amount you choose to be personally responsible for, which is deducted form the amount to repair or replace your vehicle and sometimes other vehicles you may be driving.
What is Comprehensive?
Covers your vehicle, and sometimes other vehicles you may be driving, for losses resulting from incidents other than collision. For example, comprehensive insurance covers damage to your car if it is stolen or damaged by flood, fire, or animals. It pays to fix your vehicle less the deductible you choose. If you have a loan or a lease then the lien holder will require this coverage. The deductible is the amount you choose to be personally responsible for, which is deducted from the amount to repair or replace your vehicle and sometimes other vehicles you may be driving.
What is Extended or Substitute Transportation Expense?
Pays expenses to rent a car if you have a loss covered under Comprehensive or Collision coverage. This pays up to the limit selected per day to the maximum indicated.
What is Towing and Labor Coverage?
Covers the costs you incur by having your car towed or worked on by the side of the road. It applies whether or not your need for towing or labor was caused by an accident. The coverage, however, does not cover the cost of any parts necessary to get your car up and running again, just the labor for installation.
What is Underinsured Motorist Coverage?
Pays you for property damage or bodily injury if you are in an auto accident caused by a driver who is insured, but who has less coverage than you.
What is Customized Equipment Coverage?
Covers permanently attached equipment, devices, accessories, enhancements and changes, other than those that the manufacturer originally installs, that alter the appearance or performance of an automobile.
What is Auto-Visual Equipment Coverage?
Provides coverage for direct or accidental loss only if the equipment is permanently installed in the vehicle, and is not necessary for the normal operation of the vehicle. Examples of covered equipment are: DVD players, TV monitors, and personal computers. Your covered limit is based upon the total cost new of the equipment that is permanently installed in the vehicle as well as the cost new of its accessories.
What are Tapes, Records and Other Media Coverage?
It provides coverage for direct or accidental loss. The limit of liability is the lesser of $200 or the actual cash value of the property or the amount necessary to repair or replace the property with similar kind and quality. If Audio-Visual Equipment is purchased along with this coverage, the limit for this coverage is in addition to the limit for the equipment coverage.
What is PIP Package Option?
These are additional benefit options available if you are injured in an accident: Income Continuation – If you cannot work due to accident-related injuries, this coverage pays lost wages, less Temporary Disability Benefits you may receive if your disability prevents you from working, up to the amount you select. Essential Services – Pays for necessary services that you normally do yourself, such as cleaning your house, mowing your lawn, shoveling snow or doing laundry. Death Benefit – In the case of death, family members or estates will receive any benefits not already collected under the income continuation and essential services coverages. Funeral Expense Benefit – Pays for reasonable funeral expenses up to the limit you select if you die as a result of an auto accident.
